To often we focus on offense, so today we are gonna focus on defense of the DLR guard brought to you by Jits magazine and Renzo black belt Shawn Williams.

ANOTHER BIG WEEKEND

This was yet another big weekend for the Vicente Junior De la Riva Team. This weekend VJ along with several other blackbelts from the 3G family had a Seminar with over 80 people in attendance. This was followed up the next day with De la Riva Team promotions of the following:

Sean McEntee, Mindy, Jake Goff, Adam Ziemnicki, Adam McClure, Brian Clouser, Mike Maker, Jay all got blue belts and Instructors Lance and Kail were promoted to brown.

We are excited to announce that Fadi Khouri, black belt team 3G and Vicente Junior, 3rd degree black belt under Ricardo De La Riva will be two of our instructors for the seminar. Both these guys are top level instructors and competitors.

VJ SEMINAR

Class is free for all Vicente Junior Jiu-Jitsu Team students. BIG WIN AT GRAPPLERS QUEST THIS WEEKEND

We would like to give a big congrats the Chris Bower for winning the Grapplers Quest US National Championship. Way to go and this should inspire everyone to keep working hard for VJ and De la Riva Team!

There are so many little but important details in this video you are going to just have to watch it for yourself (maybe several time.) Mestre details the omoplata, gripping, and the cross guard to triangle setup, pure awesomeness.

HUGE WINS AT THE MARYLAND OPEN

De la Riva team took home the gold in more than one way this weekend. Lead my Mestre Vicente Junior, De la Riva team demolished the other teams by more than 400 points. Check out the results here. Great job, and congratulations to all the competitors!

SEMINARS AND COMPETITION

 VJ's Academy in Brazil recently hosted Mestre De la Riva for a seminar. The turnout was huge and DLR Black Belts from surrounding cities came by to show their support. Take a look at the pics here!

MESTRE DE LA RIVA AND HIS REVERSE DLR SWEEP

Check out this great great reverse De la Riva sweep that can be used when you opponent tries to pass your guard with a knee slide. Simple, yet very effective!

Professor VJ is in California training with this elite crew, in preparation for the World's, which takes place the first week in June. BIG NEWS THIS WEEK!

Lots of stuff going on at the Vicente Junior De la Riva Academy. This past weekend Steve Rinker (VJ BJJ Brown Belt) hosted a seminar at the Pennyslvania Academy. The seminar had a great turn out and special guest from Brazil, Jonas who is VJ's brown belt, who also holds a black belt in Judo. The seminar went great and ended with VJ handing out lots of stripes. Congrats to all!

Please join us for a hard week of training as the final days tick down to the NY Open happening this coming Saturday. A lot of guys from the team are competing and could use your support.

VJ BJJ De la Riva Team ready for Pan Ams this weekend

A large group of competitors from VJ's school's have traveled to California this week to partake in the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship.VJ is also competing for the first time in almost a year and he is ready for war. Show your support by following the blog and watching Facebook for updates. Keep in mind that all of Saturdays action is free, streaming live on Budovideos. Sundays finals will cost you a small fee of $10 which is well worth the price. Good luck team!

De la Riva Open guard pass

Another great technique from Mestre. Passing the open guard with ease is the name. Mestre shows you a two on one lapel grip to easily pass someones guard with little strength and maximum efficiency.

DLR Guard Drills

This is a a great exercise as a warm-up or for any beginer. It will help strengthen anyone's guard game. Watch the master in action at his Spain Affiliate.

De La Riva Team Wins Big at L.I. Pride

De La Riva Team came away with some huge wins this past weekend at Long Island Pride. Here is the medal count:

• Jay 1st place 

• Mindy 1st in weight 3rd in absolute

• Sean and Adam split first in weight

• Nate Grebb got 2nd in weight
• Lance got 2nd in weight 

• Kail got 2nd in weight

• Tony got 1st in weight
• Micah got 1st in weight

De la Riva v Royler Gracie: The fight that meant everything!

This is part one of the fight between Mestre Ricardo De la Riva's and Royler Gracie for the “Cantão Cup.” De la Riva won by sweeping the Royler with his trademark guard. This was Royler Gracie’s first competitive defeat as a Black Belt. After beating Royler, De la Riva's highly effective guard techniques were simply called the "De la Riva Guard," which is currently used by the top fighters in the world to this day. This is truly an amazing fight and its great to watch each fighter attack and counter.

De la Riva v Yuki Nakai

This fight was De la Riva's most recent to date, he went head to head with Yuki Nakai on his home turf. This is a great fight, that is unbelievably technical.

The De la Riva Sweep Armbar

Here is a nice little variation of the De la Riva Guard, brought to you by 3rd degree Black Belt and 7 time world champ Robson Moura. This is only one of the many ways to sweep and counter, when your opponent sits down using the DLR hook. Don't forget, Practice makes Perfect!

Part 2: Interview with Mestre

Big wins for De la Riva Team this weekend at the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials in Jersey City, NJ. De la Riva Maryland represented well and brought home a Gold and a Silver metal. Competition was tough and brought the best out of all the athletes, great showing and a fun weekend of fights. Congrats to Everyone!

Just a reminder our schedule has changed slightly as of last week

The only classes effected are Tuesday and Thursday classes are half hour later, making them from 7-8:30pm

Also team training will take place this Friday 21st, all De la Riva Team affiliates are invited!

De la Riva Team #2 Ranking at the Good Fight

 Congrats to all the competitors this past weekend that participated in both the Good Fight and the Maxercise Tourneys. At the Good Fight the kids and teens dominated the the mats and proved to be a force to be reckoned with in 2011. VJ BJJ Belt Promotions in Brazil

This was a huge weekend the Vicente Junior De la Riva Team. This past Sunday January 9th over 60 De la Riva students in Brazil came out the train and celebrate the 30+ students that were taking belt tests. De la Riva students from all over the area were in attendance including several of VJ's Black Belts; Professores: Tarciso Manso, Kleber Nascimento, Ná, Celio Formiga, and Edilson. This was a very special weekend for all students and professors involved and we will continue to grow the Vicente Junior academies and the De la Riva Legacy in the New Year.
